Finally, a full week...
For READING, we continue with our unit on finding the lesson or moral in fairytales and fables. Our SPELLING unit is #32, which features 2-syllable short vowel words. In WRITING, we work more on composing our own Fractured Fairy Tales. We do more practice and work with Measurement in MATH. And, we hopefully see our butterflies hatch this week in SCIENCE! Another short week, due to Memorial Day on Monday...
In READING this week, we start our third major unit covering Fairy Tales, Folk Tales and Fables -- looking at both their story elements and the lessons and morals they teach. In LETTERLAND, we cover Unit 31: contractions like "won't" and "isn't." In WRITING, we use our Reading unit to look at the structure of Fairy Tales and Fables, and write our own version of them. For MATH, another new unit: Measurement. Finally, we have paused Geography to do some SCIENCE: Life Cycles, especially caterpillars and butterflies. This week, we take our 2nd major reading test on non-fiction texts that focus on steps in a procedure or a historical event. Our spelling unit is No. 30, "er" and "est" words. For writing, this is our last week with persuasive writing. We'll also take a test in Math, covering problem solving 2-digit addition and subtraction problem in word problem form. In Social Studies, we look specifically at landforms for our Geography unit.
This week there is no school on Wednesday due to the downtown Teacher Rally.
For Reading this week, we continue to look at non-fiction text and steps in a procedure writing, along with writing that talks about scientific processes. Our spelling Unit is about "-ed" words like "loaned" and "spanned." Writing is still focused on opinion and persuasive compositions. In math, we're now into our new unit exploring addition and subtraction word problems. We start investigating different Landforms in Geography this week. Only three days this week, then track out. In READING, we’ll dive deeper into our new unit – “Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text” by looking at the technical procedures aspect (e.g. brushing your teeth, baking cookies, building a bird feeder, etc.). Our WRITING focuses on Persuasive Letters: we’ve begun composing using a planning map, and will start to fill those out. In SPELLING, there is no official list, due to our short week – instead, we will practice as part of our reading activities. For MATH, we finish up our Partitioning Shapes unit, and will take the test on Tuesday. SOCIAL STUDIES will involve continued work with Geography and Maps.
This week, we'll continue reading Informational texts in READING and discussing the main point of the article(s), and identifying what reasons/details the author gives to support the main point. LETTERLAND spelling will be Unit 27, focusing primarily on "-f" words and their plurals, like "leaf" and "leaves". The focus of WRITING remains Persuasion and Opinion pieces; we'll talk about, and create, book reviews. For MATH, we'll be studying 3-digit subtraction, and strategies to solve these problems successfully. We continue on with our SOCIAL STUDIES about Geography and Environmental Literacy.
Quarter 4 is here! Much yet to do!
This week (and next), we'll be reading Informational texts in READING and discussing the main point of the article(s), and identifying what reasons/details the author gives to support the main point. LETTERLAND spelling will be Unit 26, focusing on Prefixes, like "un" "pre" "re" and "dis." The focus of WRITING is now Persuasive writing (reviews, opinion letters, etc). For MATH, we'll be studying 3-digit subtraction, and strategies to solve these problems successfully. Science gives way to SOCIAL STUDIES. We'll explore Geography and Environmental Literacy. The final week of Quarter 3 is upon us!
This week in READING, we cover several topics to close our or quarter, including comparing and contrasting non-fiction text. For LETTERLAND spelling, we are learning Unit 25, which covers "-eer" and "-ear" words. In WRITING, we continue with Realistic Fiction stories. In MATH, we enter our second week of 3-digit addition; we'll be learning the number-line strategy this week. Finally, it's our last week of SCIENCE, and we will focus on the tools that meteorologists use, like rain gauges and anemometers. This is the last week of our READING unit in Comparing and Contrasting Two Stories. Our SPELLING Unit is #24, "are" and "air" words. For WRITING, we keep on with our Realistic Fiction. In MATH, we start up our final unit this quarter -- 3-digit addition! SCIENCE continues with our study of the Weather.
