Key Words!
Here is a list of key words that your student will find in many test questions for reading. Help them study these so they will fully understand the questions being asked.
Key Idea - the main thing or most important fact from the text
Key Details - These are important details in the text that support the key idea
Describe - Tell about something
Summarize - This means to retell the story in your own words (summary)
Character traits - these are adjectives used to describe a character in a story (example: brave, strong, sympathetic, helpful)
Text Features - table of contents, pictures, captions, bold words, diagram, tables, glossary, labels, etc.
Cause and effect - "because it was raining, Tina bought an umbrella"
Evidence - the same thing as a key detail; using information in the text to prove your answer(s)
Lesson - what you or a character learns from what happens in the story
