What are these mclass reading tests my child takes?
Official definition:
"The purpose of the mCLASS assessments is to provide diagnostic measures for K-2 students in literacy...."
Explanation:
The mClass assessments are really a group of tests to determine your child's reading strengths and weaknesses. We give them three times a year: beginning of the year; before the Christmas/winter holiday; and at the end of the year. This is not a test you can or should prepare for. It is just a "snapshot" of your child's current reading abilities.
Specifically, there are three tests:
1. Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF): The student is presented with a list of VC and CVC nonsense words (for example, sig, rav, ov) and asked to read the words.
2. DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency (DORF): The student is presented with a reading passage and asked to read aloud. The student is then asked to retell what he or she just read.
3. mCLASS:TRC Text Reading and Comprehension: Ability to comprehend while reading connected text accurately and fluently.
Once your child completes these, an overall score is given, which we use to pinpoint reading and fluency work (primarily guided reading) that will help them grow as readers!
