A short week, starting on Tuesday. Plus, we have a half-day on Friday the 20th. HOWEVER, we come back to school on Saturday, January 21st for another snow make-up day.
For READING this week, we will finish up our unit on How Characters React to Events in a Story. For WRITING, our poetry unit continues, with work on Cinquains and Haikus. Our spelling unit is Letterland Unit 12. in MATH, we begin our unit on shapes, where we'll explore the attributes of shapes like circles, rectangles and hexagons, among others. Our SOCIAL STUDIES unit continue our exploration of Economics and Personal Finance. ALERT: No School on Monday, January 9 or Tuesday, January 10 due to inclement weather conditions. Make up days are Saturday, January 14th and Saturday, April 1. Stay tuned for more information as we approach these dates.
Despite our short week, we will continue on...! In WRITING, we continue our poetry unit; we will be writing couplets and quatrains. For LETTERLAND, we are in Unit 11 (see the Spelling link above). Our READING lessons will again focus on characters in stories, and how they react to different events in the story. MATH will find us deep into our Money unit, learning how to count coins, add up multiple price amounts, and making change. For SOCIAL STUDIES, Ms. Murphy will examine wants and needs, and how they affect when and why we spend or save money. Well, it's already halfway through the year. But that doesn't mean we're taking it easy...we're ready to keep on learning more and more!
For WRITING this week, we begin our Poetry unit! This is so much fun, and we do lots more than just poems: we learn how to think like a creative writer, which is useful for all types of writing. Our first two weeks of READING focuses on paying attention to how characters respond (in good ways and bad) to events in a story or text. Our Letterland unit is Unit 10, in which we look at vowel pairs "ai", "ay", "ow", and "oa". In MATH, we start our with our Money unit (which was moved from 2nd quarter to this quarter). Finally, in SOCIAL STUDIES, we take an in-depth look at Economics and Financial Literacy. |
