Welcome to Quarter 4!
We begin this quarter's WRITING plan with a focus on Opinion pieces, including letters, essays and other persuasive pieces. Our READING unit this week brings a focus on the reasons an author gives to support a point or points in a non-fiction text. Our SPELLING unit is Letterland #19, which focuses on plural endings, with an emphasis on "y to -ies" endings. In MATH, we begin a unit on Problem Solving (word problems). Finally, our new SOCIAL STUDIES unit will be all about the Environment and Geography. Week 9 marks the end of Quarter 3. Wow, it's going so fast!
Our WRITING unit comes to a close, as we complete our Realistic Fiction papers. READING will find us practicing our book club strategies, along with comparing and contrasting Non-Fiction texts. Letterland Unit 18 is our SPELLING focus: "ea" words like "bread" and "sweater." We'll also bring to close our MATH unit, with a last push on 3-digit subtraction. SCIENCE, too, reaches its end with a last few lessons on AIR and WEATHER. Hello All! This week in WRITING, we continue our Realistic Narratives. We've be busily writing fiction stories that could actually happen -- no aliens, Minecraft characters or Superheros. The kids have such creative ideas! For READING, we are comparing NON-FICTION texts on the same topic, and evaluating facts and main ideas along the way. For LETTERLAND, we are in Chapter 17, where we are learning about -ew, -ue and oo words. In MATH, we are in the midst of learning how to apply our addition strategies to 3-digit Subtraction problems (ex. 495-138). SCIENCE finds us deep in our topic of AIR and WEATHER; this week we'll be learning and experimenting with bubbles, anemometers, and wind vanes! Oh, and we'll talk some about Clouds, as well.
Week 7 brings some interesting learning! For WRITING, Ms. Murphy continues the Realistic Fiction unit; everyone is doing well so far, planning out their stories and getting ready to add events and details. In READING, Mr. Fowler will give the assessment on Comparing Two Different Stories on the Same Subject, then move into comparing two non-fiction texts on the same topic. For SPELLING, Ms. Murphy leads the kids through Letterland Unit 16, which covers the "oo" sound (as in "tooth"). MATH: Ms. Murphy instructs the kids this week on strategies to add 3-digit numbers (e.g. 251 + 198). Mr. Fowler keeps on with SCIENCE, instructing the kids in the various properties of Air, with a goal to tie into the Weather at the end of the week.
