This week in READING, we continue our Compare and Contrast of Two Stories, focusing on their Characters, Settings, Problems, Solutions and other story elements. Letterland SPELLING is unit 23, "oor" "ore" and "our" words (ex. door, pore, pour). For WRITING, we are now fully into our Realistic Fiction unit, and learning how to choose a topic and to begin filling out a planning sheet. This week in MATH, we finish our Array study, then work on adding a string of 2-digit numbers together (next week we move into 3-digit addition). In SCIENCE, this week will be about weather terminology.
Mid-term reports go home this Friday.
For READING this week, we'll take our Point of View/Perpsective assessment. Our poetry unit is all but complete, as we finish up our poetry journals, and also create some live recordings of our poets reading their work! Math finds us exploring attributes of shapes, and we are also looking at mathematical arrays -- two separate topics, but we're eager to stay on course, considering all our snow days. In Science, our weather unit has us pondering the Sun, and how important it is to weather patterns and changes. On Monday, the kids have their Economics Fair; this will probably be a two-day affair, as we might get a later start today because of Science Go Round that afternoon.
Science Go Round, as many of you know, is an in-school festival where local scientist come to school and put on demonstrations. Our 3 sessions are STEM and Marketing; Coding and Programming; and learning about Patents. For regular learning this week, in READING we’ll continue to learn about Point of View and Character’s Perspective in Fiction. We are still in our Poetry unit in WRITING. LETTERLAND Spelling is Unit 21. In MATH we are now into our 2D Shapes unit. And we’ll bring out SOCIAL STUDIES unit to a close. With all this I’m also administering the Math Middle-of-the-Year Benchmark (NKT), and a mid-quarter MCLass progress monitoring for Reading. This is another strange week, considering the holiday on Monday, and the 1/2 day on Saturday -- PLUS, we might have snow Wednesday...
My general plan is as follows: In READING, we'll wrap up our unit in which we examine how character react to events in a story; I plan to give our main test on this unit. For SPELLING, we will look at Unit 19 from last week, and take our Spelling test. WRITING is more poetry; specifically we'll talk about Haikus and Cinquain poems, among others. For MATH, we'll also finish a unit -- Money. I plan to give the common assessment later in the week. Finally, in SOCIAL STUDIES, we keep on keeping on with Economics and Personal Finance. NOTE: All this could change, should we get another round of snow. WELCOME TO QUARTER 3!
This week in READING, we review several concepts, including text features and asking and answering questions -- all while I work to complete the mid-year Reading Evaluations (MClass). For LETTERLAND, we look at "ea" words like bread and thread. WRITING is all about poetry: we remind ourselves of the fundamental elements of poetry like rhyme and stanzas, then begin to craft some poems of our own. Math will be about MONEY: understand coin values, and how to count up values, and make change. SOCIAL STUDIES will be about Economics, including business, global and personal. This week is a short one! Tuesday is an early-release day for Thanksgiving break.
We'll not start any new units this week, but we will finish our MATH test, and take our SCIENCE test. We also need to revisit what we've been learning in READING so far to fill in some gaps. And of course, start sharing our Science experiments! No spelling this week, per se -- instead we'll take our in-class spelling bee. Finally, look for some special homework assignments for the break :) ! It's track-out week! Remember, this Friday is early release.
Our unit for READING this week covers Main Idea -- we'll read passages and paragraphs, and determine what the text is mainly about. For SPELLING, we are into Unit 12, which covers "ar" and "or" words like North and Party. We'll be doing more WRITING like scientists this week, with some small observations and reports. Our MATH unit stays with place value, but we'll shift to word problems and problem solving using what we know about place value. Finally, SCIENCE continues with Sound, where we will do some work with volume and amplification. For READING, we will focus on non-fiction text features like titles, captions, glossaries, table of contents, etc. For SPELLING, were studying Letterland Unit 11 (Silent letters: kn, mb, igh, wr). In WRITING, we continue to write like scientists. In MATH, we stay with our focus on place value. Our SCIENCE unit is Sound, and studying sound as a result of vibration.
Quarter 2 is upon us! Here's a rundown of what we'll do this week.
In READING, we will identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain or describe. For SPELLING, we'll be studying Unit 10, Vowel Pair words (ai, ay, oa, ow). Our WRITING unit will be all about Writing Like A Scientist. This ties in with our SCIENCE unit on Sound. Finally, in MATH we continue work on Place Value, with a focus on skip counting, numberlines and other strategies to explore ones, tens and hundreds. Week 9, our final week of Quarter 1...
The last week of the quarter will find us doing reviews on many of our previous Reading objectives, and then working on some extension activities, too. For SPELLING, we are on Letterland Unit 9. WRITING is unchanged, as we complete our ongoing personal narrative papers. In MATH, we will take our first test on Place Value. For SCIENCE, we wrap up our unit on Liquids and Solids. |
