Only 3 more weeks of quarter 1 -- yikes! Lots to do...
For READING this week, we finish our current unit (Using pictures to help us understand fictional texts) and begin a new one, which examines ways to use pictures and illustrations to understand non-fiction texts. Our SPELLING unit is #7, looking at different forms of "-ed" words. We continue our personal narrative focus in WRITING. In MATH we wrap up our study of word problem strategies, and turn to a short unit on Odds and Evens. For SCIENCE, we spend some times acquainting ourselves with Liquids and their properties. Welcome back from the Labor Day Holiday, and to week 6!
This week in READING, we focus on RL2.9, which has the students examining how both texts AND illustrations help the reader understand the story. For LETTERLAND, we are in week 6, which focuses on "ge" and "dge" words. WRITING is more work on personal narratives. In MATH, we keep our focus on word problems, and the various ways to understand and solve them. This week marks our switch into SCIENCE, where we will be learning about Solids and Liquids. Welcome back from track out, and Happy Eclipse week!
In READING this week, we finish up our discussion of story elements, and begin examining ways to ask and answer questions about NON-fiction texts. In Letterland, we skip ahead to Unit 32, to start a few weeks of practicing multi-syllabic words. in WRITING, we'll start pushing forward to finish our first personal narrative paper before mid-terms. MATH find us in the middle of practicing more addition and subtraction strategies. Finally, in SOCIAL STUDIES, we examine the structures and purposes of local, state and federal governments. This is our final week before trackout. Note that I will be continuing my TRC reading evaluations through the week as part of our day.
For READING, we will spend more time writing good Thick and Thin questions based around the texts we read. SPELLING finds us in Unit 3 of Letterland, "Reviewing 'ng', 'ing', 'll', 'ff,' and 'ss' words." For WRITING, we keep on writing our personal narratives; we'll talk a lot about keeping our paper focused. MATH is all about more addition and subtraction strategies, specifically NumberLines, Hundreds charts and Making 10. SS continues our unit on Community and Government. This week, and through the next, I will giving each student their individualized TRC/MClass reading tests to evaluate their reading proficiency -- all the while weaving regular instruction in and around these evaluations. (We'll continue this testing when we track back in, or until everyone is complete, whichever comes first). Let me know if you have any questions.
For READING, we start looking deeper at the objective "Asking and Answering Questions about What We Read". For SPELLING, we are into Unit 2 of Letterland, "More Open and Closed Syllables." For WRITING, we take the story ideas we've been brainstorming and start the planning process to turn it all into a paper! MATH is all about more addition and subtraction strategies. SS continues our unit on Community and Government. Welcome students and families to 2nd grade! Each week I will post a few notes about what we will be learning each week. You'll also be able to find our Specials and our weekly spelling words. The Learning Links will take you to many online links for activities we'll do throughout the year.
This week in WRITING, we will begin to explore writing narratives, with a focus on taking a small moment during an event, and exploring it. For READING, we'll spend this week examining the parts of a story, like Characters, Setting, Problem/Solution and Plot. For SPELLING, we look at Letterland Unit 1, which covers open and closed syllable words like "pro" and "sock". Our MATH activities will center around adding and subtracting numbers within 20. Finally, for the first 4 weeks we have our SOCIAL STUDIES unit, in which we explore the ideas of community and government. This week marks our next-to-last week in 2nd grade! Wow! This week is EOG week, and even though we don't officially take those tests, we WILL take some practice tests (in Reading and Math), to get us ready for all the tests 3rd grade will ask. Look for emails with more details on this.
In WRITING this week, we start the final push on our animal Life Cycle reports. Some of us have finished our first one and are investigating other creatures. For READING, we'll spend Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday practicing our test-taking strategies that will help us understand and answer our practice tests. SPELLING is TBA. For MATH, we'll also review a few days as noted above. Since we released our butterflies last week, our SCIENCE activities will focus on reviewing a our units from throughout the year. Three weeks to go, and everyone is working really hard! Keep it up, Falcons!
Our WRITING unit this week is all about life cycles...we continue our life cycle reports (as your child about THEIR life cycle animal). Fables, folktales and morals-of-the-story are what occupies us during READING this week, culminating with our last reading common assessment. Letterland Unit 25 is our SPELLING focus -- we study a variety of "-ear" and "-eer" words In MATH, we study more ways to graph and plot (and report) data. For SCIENCE, our butterflies "should" hatch this week, giving us lots to observe and discuss. We'll probably release them back to nature on Friday... This week in WRITING, we begin our research unit on the life cycle of animals. Students will choose an animal, research its facts and features (including life cycle), culminating with a written report. For READING, we begin a deep-reading unit on fables and fairy tales, with the goal of understanding the message or moral they contain. For Letterland SPELLING, we'll cover Unit 24, which covers some "-air" and "-are" words. In MATH, we STILL have more measuring activities to do... And finally, SCIENCE will dovetail with writing as we discuss the life cycles of various animals.
